Its history of providing shade to traveling merchants makes the banyan tree the basis of design for the Banyan Pavilion, sited in the Queen’s Park Savannah, Trinidad and Tobago. The pavilion juxtaposes a real banyan tree north of the location, in the Botanic Gardens. The concrete walls, metal rods and shade cloth become the aerial roots, trunks, branches and the canopy to provide shelter and re-present nature’s architecture.
