Balancing Cube on Column
A Classic Optical Illusion
While recently building a Luft 46 Antarctic base with a Haunebu II flying saucer (a totally fictitious vessel) for an upcoming magazine article, I stumbled across this nifty optical illusion. By chopping the corner off a cube, you can balance this geometric shape in a delightfully whimsical manner. Introducing a classically-shaped column to this balancing act further enhances the visual impact of this optical illusion.
The Model
There are two STL files for this model: the column and the cube. In order to construct a complete column, print two copies of the column file. Glue the two column parts together, end-to-end. Testors Liquid Cement for Plastic Models (#3507) is recommended for assembling your model. Then add the square-shaped base (column capital) to each end of the assembled column. Now carefully balance the 3D cube print on the column capital.
