History
Many ancient cultures around the world revered snakes as symbols of creation, health and vitality. Most religions depicted minor or secondary gods in a pantheon with serpentine features, however. Yet, the primary and most important gods of one of the most successful and mysterious cultures, the Aztec culture, were snake hybrids. The most prominent being Quetzalcoatl, The Feathered Serpent, Xiuhcoatl, The Fire Serpent, Mixcoatl The Cloud Serpent and Coatlicue “She of the Serpent Skirt,” or the mother of the Aztec god Huitzilopochtli. In Nahuatl, the language spoken by the Aztecs, the word for serpent is in fact coatl, which is found in many other compound words of the language. Architecturally, snakes played a very significant role in the surrounding buildings of the Aztec culture. The Coatepec, or “hill of the serpents,” is considered holy ground as it was the birthplace of the god Huitzilopochtli. Huitzilopochtli is the principle Aztec god, making this site sacred ground. In ceremonial areas, a coatepantli, or “wall of serpents,” was used to identify and close off a sacred space. One of these walls in fact surround part of the Great Temple in the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan.
