This is a Sense3d scan of a giant Corpse Flower. The Sense3d is usually pretty useless for scanning flowers because it doesn't have enough resolution. But this flower is 5 feet tall. Whats more it smells like rotting meat. As if that wan't bizarre enough, the scientific name is "Amorphophallus Titanum" which roughly translates to "enormous misshapen phallus." The model is reduced to 1:10 scale so it will fit most printers.
I saw (and smelled) the flower at California Carnivores, our local carnivorous plant nursery. Although the plant isn't actually carnivorous it fits right in with all the other bizarre specimens.
We talked about this and a whole lot more on the 3D Printing Today podcast available on iTunes, or Stitcher radio learn more at http://www.threedprintingtoday.com/
