From the viewpoint of organization, an airport is a complicated structure. There are a lot of different flows which needs to be managed, like people, luggage, cargo and of course the airplanes themself. The airplanes are managed by the air traffic control (ATC). These people control all the airplanes on the ground and the flying planes in a certain range around the airport. Although they use a lot of digital information, the primary method of controlling the immediate airport environment is by visual observation. For this task almost every airport has a recognizable air traffic control tower.
