Built in 1963, the Arecibo Obsevatory is located near the city of Arecibo, in Puerto Rico. It is run by Cornell University and works as the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center. The disc spans 850 feet across (1000 feet when measuring the actual surface of the disc), and is used for radio astronomy, aeronomy, and radar astronomy.
