This is a mounting plate for an Arduino Nano to be placed on the back of a 16x2 or 20x4 LCD character display. These are sized for the displays with large character size (~9.3 x ~5.0mm). The 20x4 backpack is designed based on the dimensions of the Newhaven
NHD-0420E2Z-FL-YBW display. The 16x2 is based on an old Optrex DMC16230 display, but the Newhaven NHD-0216SZ-FL-YBW display is identical in size.
The display mounts on the front of the backer and the Nano mounts on pins on the back. There are four 1.5mm pins that fit the holes at the corners of the Arduino Nano V3 and many of the clones. Some clones do not have these holes, so be sure what you have. An alternative would be to break off the thinnest section of the pins and use the thicker bases as stand-offs, and super glue the Nano to them. You can super glue the Nano with the pins, but I have found it not to be necessary. .
The Nano clones are available from China on eBay at an unbelievably low price. The price is so low that it makes sense to use the Nano even as a dedicated "serial backpack" and nothing more. But with the Nano, you can use the "backpack" as the entire microcontroller!
Included on the backer are 3 holes for a single turn 10K potentiometer, with a rectangular pass-through for the wires to get to the Nano
I have included a STL file for a 3.5mm spacers to go between the backer and the LCD. I use 0.132" aluminum spacers and #4 screws
