Ivan Eplep's Apple IIe iPhone Status: Unfinished ToDo: Make screen bulbous, Make keys more keyboard-ish On the eve of the birth of Apple's phone, computer designer Ivan Eplep presented what the company's first smartphone might look like if it came out in the 80s of the last century. With technology from the Apple III+, and a persistent strong demand for the II series, Apple set about creating a new system to offer the market. The Super //, or the IIe as it was offically known, was, and still is, Apple's most successful design with 11 years on the price list. Released in 1983, the very well designed IIe incorporated modern memories and ASICs to help reduce its overall cost. The Apple IIe was the most popular II series ever made. The concept of this device is called Apple IIe iPhone, or what I call the Apple ] ePhone. The 80's are the time of mechanical keys, snowwhite cases and CRT monitors displaying textual information. Epling suggested that the iPhone would receive a plastic case in the style of the original Mac with an iridescent logo. The device itself would be similar to a calculator: heavy themed and with large mechanical buttons. I added a camera, a mic and a speaker area. In addition to Apple IIe calls, the iPhone could contain a small phone book, but SMS could not be sent - in the 80s this service was not yet available.
