A ceramic brewery sign affixed to the front of the Hand Hotel in Chirk, right on the English - Welsh border. The colourful advert presumably dates from the first half of the Twentieth Century, the heyday of Ansells. Founded in 1858 near Birmingham, Ansells successfully spread across much of the West Midlands, eventually merging with Tetley Walker and Ind Coope to create Allied Breweries in 1961. By this time Ansells was directly managing over 1000 licensed houses in the area, and selling ale and beer across England. Their luck ran out in 1981 and the brewery was shut down due to employment issues. Ansells Mild and Best Bitter are still produced under the Carlsberg label by JW Lees.

Despite the heavy varnish finish and my inebriation, I was drawn to the sign by its bold colours and evocation to local pottery workers. Perhaps some of them enjoyed designing it. It modelled well with 50 images taken on a Xiaomi Mi 11 with Leica lense, July 2021. - Ansells Brewery | Pub Sign - Buy Royalty Free 3D model by Nick Mason Archaeology (@nickmason)
