Here is a collection of files to print and build muqarna style decorations. "Muqarba", - mocárabes in Spanish -, would be the Andalousi version of this genre, found in the Alhambra in Granada (sample in pics) and Sevilla Alcazar, from around the XIVth century. General name in English would be muqarna. The system is some kind of flexible 3D tessellation, mainly used in ceilings and arches. Three main forms in plan and around 8 forms in 3D, with simple combination rules, have the potential to generate complex forms and visual effects. Original pieces were either gypsum/plaster or wood.
Geometry of these files has been developed by Antonio Saseta, based on XVII C treatises by Diego López de Arenas and Fray Andrés de San Miguel. Even though some definite proportions model is given by these authors, looking in situ to existing examples one can tell the geometry can be used in quite flexible ways, respecting the basic plan and "interface" between the pieces rules.
This is a work in progress. Files included are stls and a Rhino working file. Stl files are approximately 1/5th of standard size seen in the main spaces of the Alhambra.
I will add asap a web page link with more info about the system.
Thsi work is being developed by the Fab Lab Sevilla network. We are studying to develop it further as some kind of construction kit game. If anyone would be interested to contribute, it would be really nice.
