I've been toying around in the node compositor trying to create a good looking flare that can be used in the Blender Internal, or Cycles. And this is one of them. You can adjust the settings to your liking or to suit your scene. It applies the setup to bright objects in your scene, you can also use images but the result isn't very pretty. =P
