1957. MERGER BETWEEN ALITALIA AND LAI. When LAI company was put into liquidation on November 1, 1957, Alitalia took over both in the management of air traffic and in the ownership of plants, vehicles and employees. Alitalia and LAI joined together to form a single large national airline. Thus was born Alitalia-Linee Aeree Italiane, which started with about 3,000 employees and a network of about 100,000 km. The network also expanded with the first connections to North America; at the same time, a property was purchased in Rome, in the Pinciano district to house the offices and the main headquarters, while the company's hub was located at the Rome-Ciampino airport. 1958. FLEET WITH 37 AIRCRAFT AND THE NEW VISCOUNT VICKERS AND DC-7Cs. The fleet reached 37 aircrafts, Douglas DC-3, Douglas DC-4, Douglas DC-6, Douglas DC-6B, Convair CV-440, were joined by the new Vickers Viscount V.785D, 52-seat turboprop for medium haul and in 1958 the 82-seat Douglas DC-7Cs for intercontinental flights.
