سميت التكية السليمانية نسبة إلى السلطان سليمان القانوني الذي أمر ببنائها عام 1554 في الموضع الذي كان يقوم عليه قصر الظاهر بيبرس المعروف باسم 'قصر الأبلق'. التكية من تصميم المعماري التركي المعروف سنان، وأشرف على بنائها المهندس الإيراني الأصل ملا آغا. بدأ بناؤها سنة 1554 وانتهى سنة 1559 في عهد الوالي خضر باشا، أما المدرسة الملحقة بها فتم بناؤها سنة 1566 في عهد الوالي لالا مصطفى باشا.
