A straight-four engine (also known as an inline-four engine) is a four-cylinder piston engine with its cylinders arranged in a straight line along a shared crankshaft.

The majority of automotive four-cylinder engines use a straight-four layout (with the exception of Subaru and Porsche's flat-four engines)[2,] and the layout is also widespread in motorbikes and other machines. As a result, the term "four-cylinder engine" is commonly used to refer to straight-four engines. When a straight-four engine is mounted at an inclined angle (rather than vertically), it is referred to as a slant-four.
