Where to?

Like many works of art, this piece reflects my own opinion of the recent political turmoil within the United States. As a 17-year-old libertarian, I cannot sympathize with either side of the spectrum; both Conservatives and Liberals have contributed to turning the American party system into a joke. They made it so that if you can’t adhere to the norms of one of these two parties, then you have no chance representation in our government. This would not be as big a deal, however, if these were parties were equal and just. But clearly, politicians and the media have recently created a chaotic and confusing general sentiment towards policies in the United States.

That being said, we must all try and sympathize with any child or adolescent that has to grow up through these unfortunate times. The current generations in power are once again leaving their greatest problems to be solved by the next generation. But how can they expect these kids to grow up into intelligible adults when they cannot derive their own original opinions; with no reliable source of news, children must rely on the opinions of parents and other subjective role models. The confusion that their environment inflicts upon them is disgusting and, if something doesn’t change, this generation of children is going to be ignorant when it’s their turn to participate in government.

To represent this feeling that we adolescents have about our political future, I’ve created an Escher-like staircase that symbolizes the convoluted imminence that may soon plague this nation--it seems as though there’s nowhere to hide, nowhere to turn, no right answer. Where do we go from here?
