The development of the car began in 1946, prototypes have been manufactured since 1948. The first prototypes were called 'Worker'.
From the very beginning, the new car was produced in two versions: the GAZ-69 with a two-door eight-seater body (six people on longitudinal three-person benches, a folding tailgate) and the agricultural (commander) GAZ-69A with a four-door five-seater body with a comfortable three-seater rear seat. The GAZ-69 family began production of the GAZ-69 family in 1953, and in parallel (from December 1954) these all-terrain vehicles were also assembled by the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. UAZ completely switched over to the production of GAZ-69 and GAZ-69A from its own production units after 1956.
