Flying Car or Roadgoing Plane...?

With so many idiots on the roads these days, do we really want that chaos to take to the air?

Anyway, thought I'd give it a try, but I've run out of talent in trying to shape a body shell around my idea of possible mechanics.

I'm no aeronautical engineer (clearly!), but how do you get a thousand kg aerodynamic nightmare into the air with less than at least 500 HP?

How do you deal with engine failure if your vehicle glides like a rock?

In this beginning of a model I have opted for wingspan and forward thrust through the gimbal mounted ducted props. They can be angled to provide both lift and forward thrust and do away with a third propeller as well as the wingtip power plants ala Osprey. I use one engine to drive the duct fans as well as the rear wheels through a single gear train. As can be seen the whole drive unit of wings, rear wheel system and engine, slides into different positions for flying and driving.

I think technology has years to go before we reach a point where power to weight ratios can make a flying car a reality.

If anyone is interested in taking this model further, feel free!

Oh and don't forget to make space for a nice, big ballistic parachute!!!

Before I forget, thanks to various GrabCadders - I have borrowed heavily from the model pool...:)
