Auxetic Foam Sample

Auxetic foams have unusual mechanical properties, they expand in all directions when stretched in one.

These foams can be fabricated from conventional foams by a combined compression and treatment process.

The model and main image are approx a 1mm cube, the final image is approx 3mm smaple that the smaller region of interest was taken from. Here is a model of an open cell polyurethane foam that has undergone the conversion process, this model was reconstructed from a series of Micro CT images.
