760 Square Foot Passive Solar Tiny Home

This is a 760 square foot two story tiny home using passive solar design for solar heating. This design evolved in order to have everything one would need for a regular home, including 1 1/2 bath rooms, washer and dryer, heat recovery ventilator. Solar shading is included as well as solar lighting of the stair way. This design has enough detail to replicate but does not include fine details like moldings and baseboards as well as window and door frames. However it is fully furnished in terms of kitchen, living room and bathroom furnishings. The layout is logical and spacious, the concept was to keep the home small but have everything a larger home would have. This passive tiny house design uses a living room window that has a flat black metal shade that turns the window into a solar space heating panel. The upstairs window is large enough to acquire enough solar heat to heat the upstairs, while some of the down stairs heat will rise to the second floor. The roof and second floor are component you can hide to view the first floor. I see tiny home designs with allot of glass, and not enough insulated walls. Those homes can over heat during the day and loose allot of heat at night. The thing is to have a balance between enough south facing windows for solar heating as well as plenty of insulation to hold the heat. Thermal mass can help to slow down the excess rise of temperature while storing thermal energy for use after dark. Home appliances give off heat, which adds to the sum of the winter time heat gain, hence enough south facing windows for solar gain and plenty of insulation, which means you do not have to have allot of windows. The rest of the windows are kept small to reduce thermal losses and these windows should be the low e kind.
