The only battleship in US history not named after a state, the Kearsarge was launched in 1898 and, in 1907, sailed round the world as part of the 'Great White Fleet', representing the United States and President Teddy Roosevelt. Her compound two-storey turrets were an interesting but ultimately unsuccessful innovation and, after World War I, she was converted into a crane ship, serving successfully until 1955, when she was scrapped. #American #Great_White_Fleet #navy #preDreadnought #ship #US #warship #World_War_I
