The very first MSX (along with the Goanna small 4x4) was the Type I, a small sports car with a 2.5 litre inline 6 producing 75 hp. Work on the Type 1 started in 1946, with the aim of launching a two model car brand in 1949. The first prototype was built in 1948, and production commenced as planned in 1949 in a small factory in Melbourne. The type 1 was well recieved and sold well enough for MSX to continue building sports cars. Shortly after it's release, owners discovered it was an ideal amature rally car, due to it's light weight, strong performance and good ground clearance. MSX had developed the Type 1 with Australia's rough, windy rural back roads in mind, knowing that that is where owners would take them, and it's suitability for rallying was a by product of that. In 1953 the Type 1 was replaced by the Type II, which introduced a coupe version. It's design has had a lasting impact within MSX, and it's influence can be seen in the GT1.
