This 6:1 NEMA 17 gearbox for 130/135mm RC tires like the below from HobbyKing:https://hobbyking.com/en_us/1-10-2-2-big-foot-monster-truck-rock-2pcs-set.html
It is designed to be forced fit INSIDE the RIM rather than using usual M12 bolts so it should work for most 125mm to 135mm 'monster truck' sets alike.
It is inspired by Le Tourneau 'electric wheel' (https://edhird.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/rg-letourneau-electric-wheel.jpg) with special kudos to https://www.thingiverse.com/Gear_Down_For_What for his great work and explanations... I just did not want a compound design.
What I wanted is something simple, with minimal external parts and post processing... just print and go!
The NEMA17 must be a rather powerful version as this gearbox is NOT very efficient!!!
I am using 17HS19 2004S1/59Ncm driven by a TMC2208 which gives me quiet operations.
You will only need:
3 x M3x10 for the based to stepper
3 x M3x22 for the cover
3 x 22mm 'pins' (I used some nails cut to length) for the PLANETS axis.
For lubrication I am using powdered graphite lubricant. The gearbox must be broken-in for smooth operations:
mount the gearbox without the RING and run in both directions for a few minutes at low rev speed. Add generous amounts of powdered lubricant on the SUN and pin holes.
remove COVER and install RING. Run in both directions for a few minutes at low rev speed. Add generous amounts of powdered lubricant on the RING
mount the gearbox completely and run in both directions. Slowly tighten the M3x22. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN them or you will block/break the gearbox.
The pins can be either force or loose fit in the PLANETS.
I've printed a few with the first filament I had available (https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07KF343LD) and the results are surprisingly good given the tooth size (.2mm) and the nozzle I used (.4mm)
