The objective of this project is to create a High Efficiency-Low Cost version of standard V8 engine, as an alternative to an I4 of V6 engine. This engine could be designed from any V8 engine and produced in the same line, keeping the costs of the project down.
In a V-8 engine, one of the cylinders banks (the Low Pressure Cylinders) is used for a Compounding Operation, receiving the combustion gases from the other bank cylinders (High Pressure Cylinders). The high pressure wave generated when the H.P. Cylinder Exhaust valve opens enters the L.P. Cylinder when it is at 90º crankshaft, producing useful work.
The LP cylinders bank would not require any Camshaft, valves, spark plugs or injectors, operating both its intake and exhaust cycles by ports at the cylinder head. This would keep the extra costs and weight down.
Between both cylinders, there is a Central Common Manifold, where gases exit from the one of HP cylinders and enters into the opposite LP Cylinder. A Secondary Air supply is provided into the Central Manifold to prevent the creation of a vacuum during the admission-compression cycle of the HP cylinders.
The extra power added by the Compounding would be produced when the corresponding High Pressure Cylinders are at the beginning of the exhaust stroke producing no power, so it will provide an extra balance of the engine. The Exhaust gases temperature and Pressure would also be much lower because the extra expansion at the Low Pressure Cylinders, allowing for using a silencer with less backpressure.
The extra expansion at the Lower Pressure Cylinders would also finish the combustion of CO an HC, so the engine would not require high compression ratio or Ignition Advance that create NOx, reducing the requirements of the Catalyst at the exhaust and reducing the backpressure generated by this element.
