The fair, with its striking neoclassical façade, was built between 1862 and 1865, replacing two smaller exhibition buildings. The building, designed by the architect JG van Beusekom was, for its time, of modern construction, given the cast iron construction and the use of glass. The glass was necessary to have plenty of natural light, important for the inspection of the grain. Traders, called stockbrokers, took samples in bags of their offerings along. They were members of the "Association de Korenbeurs" and abide in the taking of samples to strict rules. On the side of the fish market is located on the imposing building, with a matching platform stairs. On the roof are the figures of Neptune (sea), Ceres (agriculture) and Mercury (trade).
