Landstown High School Governor’s STEM & Technology Academy - Jennifer Renne - While the world may be moving at a rapid pace where human growth is being left behind, the primitive functions of human can still be troublesome. Ebooks and online browsing of sheet music for piano score is becoming more readily available, but many pianists prefer the book and score of the music. There are those, piano page turners, who serve as assistant to pianists to turn their pages for them, but having such piano etiquette and standing on stage to support them is a waste of human energy and awkward for the audience.
The Musica allows for the pianist to quickly turn their page. The mechanism in the Musica utilizes the translation of linear motion to angular motion to push the page. When the user pull the rod sticking out of the Musica, it has a double axle system to fixate back part to swing in the direction to push the page and the front part allows the back part to be used in a forward motion. To fit the requirements of the competition, I had the Musica be split into two sides and have them supported by a hinge system. It also compliments the piano stand or the piano you’re using with a stylish design of black and white to match the keys and the elegant design of the Treble and Bass clef. This is useful for young piano players who play short pieces but with multiple pages to assist them with turning the pages. It doesn’t use batteries like the other few page turners, so money spent on batteries and overpriced piano turners can be used somewhere else. With its easy manufacturing, it can made into kits for others to create themselves to allow piano players and others to explore the mechanisms of translating motions inside a simple tool like a piano turner. Being able to utilize the tools of a pianist and a STEM engineer expands not just knocks off a basic task but invests in the future of musicians and engineers.
