When we decide to throw our soda cans into the bins marked "recycle" we contribute to the improvement of our economy, our environment, and ultimately our future. By recycling, we save limited resources that would otherwise end up in landfills and oceans. This means as time goes on, our conservation of these resources through recycling becomes increasingly important. New technology and innovation will make our recycling processes more efficient; however, it is up to us (the people of the world) to do our part. My sculpture is designed to be a monument to the progress we have made in reusing what we produce, but more importantly a visual reminder of the work each one of us must do to ensure a clean future. This sculpture will stand 17 feet tall and be manufactured by melting down around 45,000 soda cans to create hollow 5 inch by 5 inch square aluminum tubing. These tubes will then be welded together to assemble the can-like structure.

The “We Can Do It” sculpture is designed to be aesthetically pleasing, simple, cheap, and practical for a real world application. Eight of the horizontal beams that create the octagonal shape at the bottom of the sculpture sit 18 inches off the ground, a perfect height for children to play on and for parents to take a seat. Finally, this sculpture is not designed to be one of a kind. Because of 3D printing technology, it will be easy to print several small scale copies that can be sent to businesses and governments around the world as a visualization of the sculpture to propose the construction of several of these exhibits. This sculpture is designed to inspire everyday people to do their part and, ultimately, to save our planet. We can do it.
