If your board is being 3d printed, you can just simply cut your board into whatever shape you feel is best as long as it is held together by something. The form doesn't necessarily have to follow its function, it can be absurd, or just something you like.

Da Charlie Brown board is held together by a bungie that traverses through the center of the board, pinning all the pieces together. The bungie is tied to a rope with a large amount of slack which is used to expand the board so the smaller parts can fit into awkward spaces (back seat of car perhaps). Since the rope is tied to the end piece, the pieces retain their order and the user wont lose any pieces.
