The cycle demonstrates a different approach to achieving
absorption refrigeration without a solution pump. Compared
to the Platen and Munters ammonia-water-hydrogen diffusion
cycle, the processes appear to be less limited by gas diffusion,
and the cycle offers the option for a wide selection of fluids to
match a wider temperature range of applications. In addition,
the Einstein cycle does not use hydrogen, which is relatively
difficult to contain and is highly explosive.
ammonia, water, and butane are not unique in absorption
refrigeration applications (Taylor, 1929), the Einstein cycle’s
configuration decouples the solution loops, and therefore
allows for closer temperature matching. These issues and
several options for improvement in the COP from the base case
values of 0.15 to 0.20 are currently under study. The objective
is to make this uniform pressure cycle without a solution pump
competitive to ammonia-water two pressure cycles using solution pumps, which are problematic.
