4_2 inch Mortar M2

This is a mid WW II version of the Chemical Mortar M2. It was used in small numbers throughout the war and in Korea afterwards. The effect of these mortars was considerable and universally praised by the using arms.

Among other distinctive features, this mortar was rifled (rare for a mortar) and the baseplate and standard were linked by connectors instead of being rigidly mounted on a common frame.

Originally designed for mule transport (about 1934), a special cart was developed to carry it by troops on foot, and during WW II it was also mounted on (**cough**) landing craft. and very effectively used primarily in the Pacific.

The pictures illustrate the three loads that the piece was broken into for transport.
